Letterpress print of a quote from William Morris, the founder of the Arts & Crafts movement. In addition to being an artist and craftsman, Morris had a profound respect for the dignity and well-being of his fellow human beings and spent his life striving to better their lot, both practically and by advocating for the importance of Beauty for human flourishing. He also loved books.
This 8x10" print was handset, one letter at a time, in my letterpress studio in Hartford, Vermont. It is printed in blue and red linseed oil ink on soft white Flurry Cotton letterpress paper. The bulk of the text is set in 36 pt. Century Old Style metal type, while the attribution is set in two different vintage wood type faces. The image is a vintage cut of metal mounted on a type-high wooden block. It was printed on 1911 Chandler & Price printing press in two passes, once for each color.
The print measures 8x10" and will fit easily in a standard frame. Frame is not included.
I make all prints in my shop personally by hand, including typesetting, carving illustrations, and printing on the press.
This print was included in the 2025 Unbound Exhibit at Artistree Community Arts Center & Gallery in Pomfret, Vermont.
